The Flintstones’ Turn 50

      

   If you opened up your Google homepage this morning and wondered why the Doodle depicts a scene from “The Flintstones,” there’s a perfectly good explanation. You see today (Thursday, September 30th), is when the classic Hanna-Barbera cartoon celebrates its 50th anniversary.
      
       As reported by Heidi Blake over at telegraph.co.uk, the search engine’s usual multi-colored logo has now been replaced by an image of The Flintstones in their Stone Age car. “The Flintstones” first aired on September 30th 1960 on ABC, and ended its run on April 1st 1966.
      
       The animated series – set in the fictional town of Bedrock – became popular with children all across the world, and is still a favorite among families today. “The Flintstones” followed the rather comical happenings of a Stone Age man called Fred Flintstone, his family and his neighbors, The Rubbles.

      With the cartoon being set in the Stone Age, there were of course plenty of rock-related puns. For example, the town of San Antonio became “Sand-and-Stony-o,” the showbiz area of Bedrock was named “Hollyrock,” and Fred’s favorite band was Mick Jadestone and the Rolling Boulders.
